Maryland Man Gets 50-Year Sentence for Killing Roommate Over TV Remote Dispute
Neighbors, the violence out here in the world is getting crazier by the day! A Maryland man who gunned down his roommate during a petty argument over a TV remote has been sentenced to five decades behind bars.
40-year-old Richard Bennaugh was recently convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of his 27-year-old roommate, Dominique Scott-Hayes. According to prosecutors, the conflict occurred in January 2024 when Scott-Hayes woke Bennaugh up, who had fallen asleep on the couch, and asked about the missing remote. At some point, the conversation escalated, leading Bennaugh to fire shots in self-defense, but witnesses and evidence revealed that he continued shooting even as Scott-Hayes tried to flee.
On Friday, a judge handed down a 50-year prison sentence to Bennaugh after finding him guilty of second-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime, and tampering with evidence. Nonetheless, Bennaugh will not be eligible for release until he is well into his senior years. Thoughts?
