According to multiple sources familiar with the project, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations, the $24 million road may not be primarily a transportation project at all.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe public story is not the full story,\u201d said one federal official. \u201cThere are national security dimensions to this that cannot be discussed in an open forum. The road serves purposes that have nothing to do with logging trucks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other insiders pointed to the region\u2019s proximity to Hudson Bay, the Arctic, and a little-known military radar installation that was quietly upgraded last year. The \u201cshortcut,\u201d they suggest, may actually be a strategic corridor designed to provide overland access to critical defense infrastructure \u2014 access that currently exists only by air or seasonal ice road.<\/p>\n
