<\/p>\nAfter their father died while in need of a kidney transplant, two Illinois sisters each\u00a0donated their kidneys\u00a024 hours apart to total strangers to make sure two other families didn\u2019t have to suffer the way theirs did.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope he would be really proud,\u201d Bethany Goralski, 25, of Chicago, told \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d<\/p>\n
After a long battle with Crohn\u2019s disease and kidney failure, their father, Mark Goralski, p\u1d00ssed away in September of 2018. Bethany Goralski said she was prepared to donate her kidney to her father \u2014 who had already underwent a transplant in 2011 \u2014 but doctors \u201ctold us at the time he wasn\u2019t healthy enough for a transplant.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just want to make sure two less families had to go through what we went through,\u201d Bethany Goralski said.<\/p>\n
Her sister, Hannah Goralski, 24, said that she also decided to give the gift of life to a stranger after her father\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are just in a lull and a loss and you\u2019re thinking about what am I going to do to stop thinking about this person,\u201d Hannah Goralski told \u201cGMA.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad was always giving, he was always helping others,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I thought what a great way to honor him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing a lot of people who have been affected by organ transplant, it felt selfish to keep my kidney,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Hannah Goralski said that she called Northwestern Memorial Hospital about a month after her father p\u1d00ssed away, and the sisters underwent the surgeries about a day apart in March 2019.<\/p>\n
Knowing that she potentially saved a life, \u201cdefinitely feels amazing,\u201d Hannah Goralski said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am definitely in my prayers every night and thinking about the people that received my kidney,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd thinking about the possible chain that this started.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hannah Goralski added that she believes if her father \u201cwas in this position, I think he would have done the exact same thing, he was always helping others.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know he would be proud,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bethany Goralski said she would encourage healthy young people to become organ donors.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would tell them to do it, I don\u2019t regret it one bit,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re young and healthy, so my recovery was only about 10 days.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hannah Goralski added that \u201cthe age I did it was very ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI\u2019ve never had any major health issues,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve only ever had my wisdom teeth removed so this was my first surgery \u2026 I felt like I bounced back very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n
She acknowledged that while there are \u201cdefinitely risks for women like preeclampsia \u2026 all women are at risk for that anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought why wait, if someone\u2019s dying now and I can help them now, hopefully by then when I\u2019m older I\u2019ll look back and say, \u2018I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t wait,\u201d Hannah Goralski said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
