House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) took a swing at Democratic lawmakers and said they \u201cincited violence\u201d with bombastic rhetoric about President Donald Trump amid the aftermath of the\u00a0White House Correspondents\u2019 Association dinner shooting\u00a0on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
Appearing Monday on Fox News\u2019 \u201cAmerica\u2019s Newsroom\u201d to discuss the incident that happened at the Washington Hilton hotel, the Louisiana lawmaker was asked about his thoughts on a Sunday\u00a0X post\u00a0from Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), in which he called on lawmakers to stop focusing on TDS [Trump Derangement Syndrome] and build Trump\u2019s White House ballroom \u201cfor events exactly like these.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fox News Host Bill Hemmer\u00a0then asked Johnson if he\u2019s been \u201chearing enough from your Democratic colleagues on the tone that Senator Fetterman struck there?\u201d<\/p>\n
The House Speaker flat-out said no before calling Fetterman \u201ca rare voice in that camp,\u201d adding, \u201cWe need more of that.\u201d
\nJohnson blamed Democratic lawmakers for having \u201cdone the opposite\u201d of Fetterman.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, you have some of the most prominent figures in the House and [in] the Senate on the Democrat side effectively calling for war. They use those kinds of metaphors,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd it incites violence, because there are crazy people in society, and they get radicalized online. And so, we\u2019ve got to recognize that. It\u2019s time to turn down the rhetoric \u2014 we\u2019ve been saying this over and over \u2014 and not use that kind of language.\u201d<\/p>\n
Noting that he hopes the incident will serve as a \u201csobering reminder for everybody about that very important cause,\u201d Johnson praised Fetterman\u2019s take.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m grateful to Fetterman. He\u2019s right, the ballroom will be a solution for this, because it\u2019ll be on the most secure compound in the world. It won\u2019t have hotel rooms above it,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd it\u2019ll have seven-inch-thick glass, for example, on the windows. So, it\u2019ll be a very safe environment to do events like this. We need a place, we have needed a place like that, and the president keeps pointing it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
The White House Correspondents\u2019 Association dinner is not usually held at the White House, as it\u2019s hosted by the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association and not White House officials.<\/p>\n
Trump, who was whisked away from the WHCD Saturday night after a gunman charged through a security checkpoint at the dinner and opened fire, used the incident to\u00a0renew his push\u00a0for his controversial planned $400 million White House ballroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House,\u201d the president wrote in a Sunday\u00a0Truth Social post. \u201cIt cannot be built fast enough!\u201d<\/p>\n
The National Trust for Historic Preservation\u00a0filed a lawsuit\u00a0to halt construction of the ballroom in December 2025, alleging that Trump skipped over congressional approval to demolish the East Wing for the project.<\/p>\n
Trump called the lawsuit \u201cridiculous\u201d and demanded that it be dropped \u201cimmediately\u201d in his\u00a0Truth Social\u00a0post.<\/p>\n
