Trump Vents ‘Unfathomable’ Hatred Between Putin and Zelensky Is Blocking Ukraine Peace Talks
President Donald Trump vented Sunday that the “unfathomable” hatred between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has blocked a peace deal from being made, which he thought would have been “easy” compared to how it has gone.
The president, while speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One, also slammed NATO, saying, “They are not doing their job” to bring the war to an end. Trump said about 8,000 soldiers died between Russia and Ukraine this week, leading him to ask “why” the war was still trudging forward.
“They are Russians, they are not American soldiers — but they’re still human beings. They’re souls. And I want to stop it,” Trump said. “You know, I stopped seven wars. I thought this was going to be an easy one for me, but this turned out to be a tough one. The hatred between Zelensky and Putin is unfathomable.”
A moment later, the president added: “They hate each other so much, they can’t breathe.”
Despite that hatred, President Trump said he remained optimistic the war would end “relatively soon.” He said he will have to get more involved to make that happen, though, because Putin and Zelensky will not talk to each other.
His Sunday comments come a few weeks after Trump said he thought he had a peace deal “done” between Russia and Ukraine when he met with Putin in Alaska.
